We set extremely high goals for
ourselves, and dedicate our time to their attainment. It is important that
you understand our objective. If this is the type of influence you wish to
have on the lives of youngsters we could get together, but please help us
weigh this carefully. If you cannot make these goals yours or comply with
our rules and regulations, do not fill out this application.
A counselor should understand and willingly agree to abide by the comp
regulations and policies that apply to Camp Chandler counselors, in order
that no misunderstanding may arise during the camp season.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A
COUNSELLORSHIP
Counselors for Camp Chandler are chosen with five basic qualifications in
character, personality, loyalty, training, and Christian dedication.
CHARACTER: A counselor's character should be above reproach and
worthy of emulation by the young people. There is no place on the Camp
Chandler staff for the counselor whose ideals are questionable, whose
language is profane or vulgar, whose spirit is pessimistic, or who does
not encourage clean sport and clean living by the way he/she plays and
lives. Those who drink, use drugs, or smoke should not apply for a
counsellorship at Camp Chandler. Youngsters of camp age are so
impressionable that they readily absorb the prevailing spirit of the
environment and often acquire the ideals of those they admire.
PERSONALITY: Counselors may have fine character and yet be of
little value in a camp. They must also have a strong, attractive
personality before they can win the admiration of the young people and
conduct their part of the camp program successfully. A counselor must be
able to befriend with a positive, willing and unselfish attitude.
LOYALTY: Loyalty to the camp, its equipment and ideas is absolutely
necessary. Criticisms of the camp, equipment, management, program, food,
or policies in the presence of the young people is the height of
disloyalty. We are anxious to do the most possible good for the entire
camp and welcome suggestions from the staff, but troubles and grievances
should be taken to the Director. Otherwise, a potentially strong leader or
good program may be impaired.
TRAINING: A counselor must not only have character, personality and
loyalty, but should have training along certain lines of camp activity.
The more versatile, the better; but knowledge of, and skill in, at least
one major camp activity and the ability to instruct in that activity are
required. We are looking for staffers who are cheerful and willing to see
their jobs through efficiency, dedication, and teamwork.
CHRISTIAN DEDICATION: The camp staff are dedicated Christians who
can challenge and inspire. We do not attempt to duplicate the programs of
a church, yet we wish to uphold high ideals by exploring keys to adventure
and camping in a Christian environment. We work with children of all
denominations, giving them positive direction for all walks of life and
our hope is for each child to experience the joys of a Christ-centered
life. Each staff member will have a turn leading a devotion.
PERSONAL APPEARANCE: A neat personal appearance is an important
asset and every counselor should look and dress the part of a counselor.
We are dedicated to establishing good relationships between parents and
counselors as well as training campers to care for themselves. Management
must reserve the right to pass judgment on hair. Hair must be off
shoulders and well kept. First impressions are very important when dealing
with parents and adults. Thus, male counselors' hair must be well kept and
earrings are not allowed on guys. Tattoos are not allowed as well.
COUNSELLORSHIP IS NOT A VACATION: Frequently people who seek
positions as counselors in camps regard such a position as a pleasant
summer outing for themselves, and therefore take the responsibility very
lightly. While a counsellorship at Camp Chandler offers a most delightful
and attractive position for the summer, especially in view of the many
personal benefits that accrue from a summer in camp in addition to the
financial compensation; yet it must be distinctly understood by every
applicant that a counsellorship at Camp Chandler means hard work, long
hours, and definite responsibility. The serious responsibility assumed by
a Camp Director for the welfare of the young people entrusted to his care
justifies him in expecting from his associates a deep devotion to duty.
The camp is run primarily for the young people. The good of each
camper is our first consideration. Each counselor should have the good of
the whole camp group so much at heart that he/she would spend an undue
amount of time with a personal friend among campers or counselors.
TIME OFF: A counselor, to do his/her best, must be happy and
physically fit. To be both, they must love their work and give themselves
whole-heartedly to tasks when on duty; and, then, when off duty, make the
most of the opportunity for relaxation, rest, and a change of environment.
Each counselor will given time off as planned for and agreed upon with the
Director. While the care of the campers is our foremost interest time off
is a secondary consideration. For junior and senior counselors, time off
consists of day and evening periods of time off in a camp. Time off is not
scheduled during camp opening and closing.
ILLEGAL DRUGS AND DRUG ABUSE: The use of alcohol and non prescribed
drugs is not allowed. Counselors must agree to abstain from the use of
these during their employment at Camp Chandler. Failure to do so will
result in a loss of salary (back pay) and dismissal. The camp staff must
set the best possible example. Youth are impressionable: therefore, the
camp environment must be strong, clean and wholesome. Camp Chandler
strictly adheres to the rule of no drinking alcohol at any time while at
camp. Illegal drugs are UNEQUIVOCALLY prohibited. Camp Chandler
believes that illegal drugs have absolutely no place in the lifestyle and
influence of a leader responsible for the safety and healthy development
of young people. Cigarette smoking and other forms of tobacco use are not
permissible at any time while in camp. Our staff members must strive to be
the best possible role models.
We dedicate ourselves first of all to help fulfill the ongoing purpose of
Camp Chandler...
 | to give every young person the best in
companionship |
 | to improve their skills and increase
their self confidence |
 | to give them opportunity and guidance
for fun and adventure through real camping |
 | to teach them patience, and
understanding, independence, and appreciation, and |
 | to show them the value of
cheerfulness, the joys of unselfishness, and the need for God in their
life. |
